Set in the Ia Drang Valley in 1965, the game smartly uses bits of cinematic inspiration from familiar Vietnam-themed Hollywood films to set the pace while the gameplay allows for players of different skill levels to learn the ropes. Hardcore sim fans can pilot the UH-1B “Huey” while players who want slightly less technical play can choose to sit in the co-pilot’s seat. If you’re a total novice, you can take the gunner’s seat and let an AI pilot do the flying, but don’t expect an unlimited ammo frag-fest or power-ups floating by in the humid breeze. You’ll often have other friendly choppers and troops to support, defend, or rescue, so paying attention to mission objectives is key. Initially daunting controls aside, it’s hard not to see and appreciate the developer’s superb attention to detail in much of the visual and aural presentation. Don’t expect any multiplayer modes either; the game doesn’t really need anything other than what it delivers to you in mostly first-rate form.
